Newsish: Sirius XM Soon to be Obsolete?

Here's a depressing article for fellow Stern Show fans about the possible death of Sirius XM.

The technology has been supplanted by better and cheaper stuff. That doesn't change the fact that Sirius XM's programming is pretty good.

What they need to honestly do is move focus away from the money-hemorrhaging satellites and focus on content delivery. Internet technology has killed Sirius XM's main delivery mechanism, but they should coopt those very technologies to deliver their unique content. I'm willing to bet that applications for iPhones, Blackberries, Windows Mobile, and Android phones would be a cost-effective way to get new subscribers. Maybe PS3's and Xboxes, too.

Sirius XM has a lot of good assets. For one, they have excellent brand recognition. For another, it has contracts with a lot of content owners - you mention Howard Stern, but there's a bunch of other stuff, too. They have 20 million subscribers who had to get new receivers - imagine how many more would be willing to pay if Sirius XM were a iPhone taps away? If they let Echostar take over the most expensive part of their operation (operating the actual satellites and ground repeaters), they might be able to survive largely intact.

Sweet. I guess I probably should've done my homework before commenting.
