Video/Music: Stand By Me Around the World

Amazing. This will give you chills if you're normal.

"This cover of Stand By Me was recorded by completely unknown artists in a street virtual studio all around the world. It all started with a base track—vocals and guitar—recorded on the streets of Santa Monica, California, by a street musician called Roger Ridley. The base track was then taken to New Orleans, Louisiana, where Grandpa Elliott—a blind singer from the French Quarter—added vocals and harmonica while listening to Ridley's base track on headphones. In the same city, Washboard Chaz's added some metal percussion to it.

And from there, it just gets rock 'n' rolling bananas: The producers took the resulting mix all through Europe, Africa, and South America, adding new tracks with multiple instruments and vocals that were assembled in the final version you are seeing in this video. All done with a simple laptop and some microphones."

TV: Rescue Me is One of the Best TV Shows On Air Right Now

FX did a TERRIBLE job of promoting the new season of Rescue Me.

I say this because it's one of my must-DVR shows and I didn't even know the fifth season had started until I had already missed the first two episodes. So with a combination of internet research and the "previously on" intro to the third episode of the season, I caught up.

And goddam this show is great.

It's the edgiest, most addictive heavy-on-the-comedy drama you can find on basic cable. The writing is brilliant. The characters are fascinating. The acting, especially Dennis Leary's, is great. And the unpredictability that comes with not knowing whether the uncomfortably tense scene you're watching will leave you laughing or leave you saying, "Holy sh*t" makes for great television.

Rescue Me Wiki

Video/Music: Drake on Joe Budden TV

OK, I promise I'm not purposefully trying to track down all this Drake stuff. Last night I wrote this post about how Drake is the sh*t and even mentioned how Joe Budden was all about him in this video.

Not even a full day later, I get on YouTube and (I discover via my subscription to Joe Budden's superpopular channel) Joe Budden's new video stars Drake.

Video/TV: Popeyes Runs Out of Chicken, Rochester News Runs Out of News

My favorite radio show to listen to in the afternoon is The All Out Show with Rude Jude and Lord Sear on Sirius' Shade 45, weekdays 4 to 8e. It's a great mix of the latest in relevant rap with hilarious, no-holds-barred hiphop/pop-culture commentary.

Lord Sear is a fat black dude, and Rude Jude is a skinny white guy (which comes as a huge suprise if you've only heard him and never seen him).

Yesterday they played a local news story out of Rochester, NY about a Popeyes that ran out of chicken way too early after promoting a big special. The discussion that followed questioned whether that news report was covertly racist.

Rude Jude hilariously pointed that even if he was there for solely for the big chicken special, as soon as he saw news cameras he would have pretended he was lost and didn't even want chicken just so as not to feed the stereotype.

One Rochester caller said he was there and saw the cook working his ass off in the back. "They were selling it faster than he could make it!" Another said he got "three of them chicken deals" at 3:30 in the afternoon, before they ran out. "That's something you gotta take off work for!"

I'm thinking that while this report wasn't intentionally racist and they were just trying to fill time on a slow news day, the executive producer at that station should have realized how incendiary this subject can be and pulled the plug on the story.

Regardless, I must admit that it made me laugh. It's one classic line after another.

But if a crappy local TV news story incites laughter, or even gets any kind of attention outside of that market, then they must be doing something wrong. (See Bubb Rubb and Leprechaun in Alabama)

And "clucking their disapproval"!? For realz? Even as an unabashed dispenser of terrible puns, this line gave me spine-tingling swabchills.

Your thoughts?

Music: Lil Wayne ft. Drake - I'm Goin' In

Speaking of Drake...

This beat is a certified banger. Ferocious!

Video: Girl Makes the Same Face in Every Picture

Those dudes she's hanging out with seem cool as sh*t. I'd like to party with them.

Music: Drake - The Next Big Thing

I've been jamming the hell out of this kid, Drake. He's a really talented rapper and R&B singer who's bound to blow up very soon. He's also apparenlty really tight with Lil Wayne, which certainly can't hurt an up-and-coming rapper's career.

He's a Canadian kid who used to be on this Canadian tween show called Degrassi: The Next Generation. I'm not gonna rehash his entire background when you can just check his Wiki page.

I'm really blown away by his rap abilities. He's very Lil' Wayne/Kanye-esque in that he uses alot of clever lyricism and multi-syllabic rhymes. It's also refreshing that he's not one of your typical machismo-exuding studio gangstas. His lyrics are quite introspective, deep and soulful.

I'd heard his name a few times here and there but didn't really hear any of his music until last weekend when I heard "Successful feat. Trae Songz and Lil Wayne" on Shade 45. It's a great example of the new sound he's bringing to the rap game.

This song is featured on his latest mixtape called So Far Gone. I use the term "mixtape" loosely because it's not your typical DJ screaming, sh*tty quality mixtape you're used to. It's actually a very professional, well-produced album. I think they just used several samples that would be very expensive to clear so they just decided to put it out there as a "mixtape" and pump up his following.

So Far Gone is quite easy to dig up via not-so-legal channels all over the internets, so you shouldn't have a problem downloading it. And I highly recommend that you do.

But if you wanna hear before you try to track it down, someone has uploaded every track from the album to YouTube. So I'll do you a favor and link to each one. Enjoy.

Drake - So Far Gone

01) Lust for Life
02) Houstatlantavegas
03) Successful feat. Trae Songz and Lil Wayne
04) Let's Call It Off feat. Peter, Bjorn and John
05) November 18th - (samples the CLASSIC "June 27th" 35-minute freestyle session, which is considered beyond legendary in Houston rap - how would a Canadian kid know this many Dirty South references? must have had help form Weezy, right?)
06) Ignorant Sh*t feat. Lil Wayne
07) A Night Off feat. Lloyd - (epic sex jam - you might have seen this arguement between Joe Budden and his girl set off by this song)
08) Say What's Real
09) Little Bit feat. Lykke Li
10) Best I Ever Had
11) Unstoppable feat. Santo Gold and Lil Wayne - ("Ain't on the fence about it, I ain't Mr. Feeny")
12) Uptown feat. Bun B and Lil Wayne
13) Sooner Than Later - (very beautiful R&B song, great lyrics)
14) Bria's Interlude feat. Omarion - (samples the classic sex jam by Missy and Ginuwine - "Friendly Skies" - I must be getting old if the stuff I used to jam when I was a kid is now getting sampled by today's stars)
15) The Calm
16) Brand New

Movies: The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia

Johnny Knoxville was on Howard this morning promoting his new documentary that's showing at the Tribeca Film Festival this week called The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia.

Here's a brief synopsis of the film from JackassWorld:

Shoot-outs, robberies, gas-huffing, drug-dealing, pill-popping, murders, and tap dancing. From MTV Studios and executive producers Johnny Knoxville and Jeff Tremaine comes a shocking and outlandish year-in-the-life documentary about the Whites—Boone County, West Virginia’s most notorious and surly family. Nestled deep in the Appalachian Mountains, the White family lives an existence more like something from the Wild West than modern day suburbified America. The legendary family is as known for their wild, excessive criminal ways as they are for their famous mountain dancing members, including Jesco White, the star of the cult classic documentary Dancing Outlaw. Over the course of one tumultuous year, the Whites deal with a stabbing, criminal sentencing, attempted murder, death, and birth. The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia is directed by Julien Nitzberg (producer of Dancing Outlaw and daily raider of the jackassworld kitchen).
Sounds crazy rad, huh?

You must see the trailer here - NSFW

So now my mission is to track down the original documentary about this guy Jesco (professional tapdancer/lunatic), called Dancing Outlaw. Here's a clip from the movie in which he talks about sloppy eggs, violence, huffing airplace glue, huffing gasoline, sniffing lighter fluid and seeing snake ladies.

TV: Watch Southland Tonight!

Southland airs Thursday nights at 10e/9c on NBC. I watched it last week and was really impressed. It's a great show.

It's about a squad of LA cops who have to deal with bizarre only-in-LA type stuff. The dude who played Ryan on The OC plays the rookie cop who's told by his new co-workers to forget everything he learned in the academy because sh*ts crazy out in the real world of LA (think Training Day).

The characters seem to have really interesting, complex backstories that should develop quite nicely. I really hope this show catches on because it's really good.
