Newsish: Hollywood writers strike

Here are the basics of the writers' guild strike:

  • Mainly, the writers are upset because they don't see any of the money from internet distribution (streaming TV shows, movies sold online, etc.)
  • Their last strike was in 1988, lasted 22 weeks, and cost the industry about $500 million
  • Regular TV series (Lost, Heroes, 24, etc.) won't be affected very much because they have scripts stockpiled
  • Shows that depend on topical, news-related humor (Letterman, Conan, The Daily Show, SNL, etc.) will take the biggest hit
  • Strike is expected to begin Monday
