Yum Yums/WTF!?: Drank, the Anti-Energy Drink
If you're familiar with rap in the Dirty South, you're well aware of "drank". Also called "syrup," "lean" or "purple," it's a combination of codeine and promethazine that has a strong sedative effect.
It got popular in my hometown (H-town!) and partially inspired the whole screw movement. It's really bad on your liver and apparently pretty addictive. DJ Screw OD'ed on it and you might remember when Lil Wayne talked about his addiction to it.
Anyway, corporate bigwigs are now trying to cash in on the trend since it's become so mainstream.
Introducing Drank.
It's got melatonin, rose hips and valerian with the intention to relax you...but marketed with the urban appeal of a popular Dirty South underground liquid drug. Brilliant. Remember I Love Blow?
A clever combination of alluding to drugs and creating controversy is a great well to get your stuff seen and sold.
